Supreme Court observes two-minute silence on Martyrs Day

The Supreme Court observed a two-minute silence on Monday to observe Martyrs Day, in the memory of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) D.Y. Chandrachud garlanded the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Supreme Court premises, after which all Judges of the Apex Court stood in silence halting proceedings.

A bell rang after two minutes to conclude the ceremony.

On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, a member of Hindu Mahasabha, who blamed Gandhi for favouring the Muslim community during the partition of India in 1947.

Godse shot Gandhi in the compound of Birla House, while he was on his way to a prayer meeting in New Delhi. 

The Government of India, In order to honour the legacy of Bapu, as the Father of the Nation was fondly called, had declared January 30 as Martyrs Day or Shahed Diwas.

The day reminds people of the philosophy practiced by Mahatma Gandhi, based on the principles of peace and violence.
