The Union government on Friday notified the appointment of judicial officer Aribam Guneshwar Sharma as judge of the Manipur High Court.

A notification to this effect was published on the website of the Department of Justice, Union Ministry of Law and Justice.

It said that in exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, President Draupadi Murmu was pleased to appoint Aribam Guneshwar Sharma, to be a Judge of the Manipur High Court, with effect from the date he assumed charge of his office.

On January 10, the Supreme Court Collegium had sent the proposal to the Union government regarding elevation of the judicial officer as High Court judge.

Aribam Guneshwar Sharma is the senior-most judge in the District Court of Manipur.

The District and Sessions Judge at Imphal West had jurisdiction over revenue districts of Imphal West, Tamenglong, Noney, Chandel and Tengnoupal.

Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also reacted to the news on micro-blogging site Twitter. ‘As per the provisions under the Constitution of India, Judicial Officer Aribam Guneshwar Sharma has been appointed as Judge of Manipur High Court,’ he tweeted.

The High Court of Manipur is currently functioning with three judges, as opposed to its sanctioned strength of five.
