Centre approves elevation of Gauhati High Court Chief Justice to Supreme Court
President Ram Nath Kovind has approved the appointment of Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia as a Judge of the Supreme Court.
As per a notification uploaded on the website of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice on Saturday, the appointment followed the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium in a meeting on May 4.
Dhulia was born on August 10, 1960 in Lansdowne in Pauri Garhwal of Uttarakhand.
His father, K. C. Dhulia, was a Judge of the Allahabad High Court and his grandfather Bhairav Dutt Dhulia, was a freedom fighter and editor of Karmabhumi newspaper in Garhwal, Uttarakhand.
Dhulia is an alumnus of Sainik School, Lucknow and Allahabad University.
Dhulia started his practice before the Allahabad High Court in 1986. As part of the Bar, he was the legal counsel for the Indian Institute of Technology (I.I.T.), Roorkee, State Industrial Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd. (SIDCUL) and Bhagirathi River Valley Authority, among others.

Dhulia became the first Chief Standing Counsel of Uttarakhand and was later appointed as the State Additional Advocate General. He was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Uttarakhand High Court in 2004.
He was also an honorary professor in the Uttarakhand Academy of Administration (ATI), Nainital.
Dhulia was elevated from the bar to the bench and appointed as Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court on November 1, 2008.
He has also been appointed the judge in-charge of education, Uttarakhand judicial and legal academy. He was elevated as Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on January 7, 2021 and took the oath on January 10, 2021.

He joined the Bar at Allahabad High Court in 1986 and shifted to his home state Uttarakhand on its formation in 2000.
He was the first Chief Standing Counsel in the Uttarakhand High Court and later became an Additional Advocate General for Uttarakhand. He was designated as Senior Advocate in 2004.
He was elevated as the judge of Uttarakhand High Court in November 2008 and later became the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on January 10, 2021.
